“I have used the Jamie York math curriculum for grades 1-8 for 13 years. As a Waldorf teacher, it has both guided and inspired my teaching with just the right amount of framework, yet leaving room for my own creativity to bring the lessons alive with experiences.
I have found the Making Math Meaningful curriculum to do just that. Mathematics becomes meaningful without the use of rote drill or blind procedure. The students learn in a developmentally appropriate way promoting mathematical fluency and flexibility.
When Covid-19 hit the US and schools closed campuses, I turned to the Jamie York Math Academy for my students. The two lectures per week became the fodder for follow-up group work – a highlight for the students! We gathered in breakout rooms on Zoom and solved complex puzzles and word problems. The students also had individual weekly math assignments. It was such a success that we will continue with the Math Academy this upcoming school year knowing that there is still uncertainty.
