Course Description
In this Philosophy of Freedom course, we will study Dr. Rudolf Steiner’s most important work. In April 1922, when Dr. Steiner was asked: “’What will remain of your work thousands of years from now?’” Dr. Steiner replied: ‘Nothing but The Philosophy of Freedom. But in it everything else is contained. If one realizes the act of freedom described there, one can discover the whole content of Anthroposophy.’”
Participants will read a chapter or two of Dr. Steiner’s Philosophy of Freedom each week. In our weekly meetings, Neill Reilly will lead us through this challenging book with a healthy mix of brief presentations, small-group conversations, and large-group discussions.
Through our working together on this book, we hope to experience a fuller reality that includes both the physical and spiritual. We can have sense free thinking via imagination, inspiration and intuition. This sense-free thinking is a free act and affirms our individuality and our common humanity. Dr. Steiner believed that each individual is capable of this most human of all experiences.
We will use Michael Wilson’s paperback translation from Rudolf Steiner Press. You can purchase it online. Please try to read the entire book in advance of the class. The Philosophy of Freedom takes work, but it is extremely beneficial to wrestle with these great ideas.
Instructor’s Biography:
Neill Reilly graduated from Bowdoin College with a B.A. in Philosophy, and also graduated from The Waldorf Institute at Adelphi University with an M.A. in Waldorf Pedagogy. Neill taught High School English for seven years. After teaching, Neill was a salesperson at financial and technology firms. Neill has written four books: Songs and Dreams, Look at What We Can Become, The Marian Way of Heart Knowledge, and The Mystery and Magnificence of Mary in Paintings and Poems. His essays and poems have appeared in Being More Consciously Human, the Bowdoin Alumni Magazine and other publications. He has presented at Bowdoin College, Harvard Divinity School, Stanford and numerous conferences and Zoom sessions.
