Course Description
In this course, specifically designed for eleventh and twelfth graders, students will be introduced to those nineteenth century writers who helped to create a rich and enduring American literary tradition. Specifically we will focus on key members of the Transcendental movement and their “offspring” through the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Frederick Douglass, Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. Students will read and discuss excerpts from essays, lectures, short stories and poetry. They will keep a daily journal, compose an “original thought,” and write a “Song of Myself,” among other challenges.
