Course Description
As the sixth grader’s developing body sinks closer to the Earth, emotionally and physically, studying the Earth fosters a greater understanding of this floating rock on which we live.
Students continue to practice their note taking skills through diagrams, outlines, and a growing vocabulary. Students engage in observational and inquiry-based activities that enrich the lesson material. Students create a book for this block that contains drawings, labeled diagrams, short informational narratives, and observational notes.
Topics covered:
- The Countenance of the Earth – the biomes and their features
- Layers of the Earth, and crustal plates
- Volcanos
- Limestone and cave formation
- Rock types: igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic
- Uses of rock types, minerals, and metals
- The Rock Cycle
- Erosion: the impacts of wind and water
- Minerals, crystals, clays, and aggregates
