Math Adventures Club
Weekly Adventures in Math!
The Jamie York Academy after-school math club is a chance to experience the wonders of a math adventure for students in grades 5-12 who can’t commit to the daily Math Academy. We emphasize discovery, puzzles, games, and problem solving to inspire a love of learning.
Meet Sean Aronson, our Math Club teacher.

You can join our Math Club at any time.
Why should a student join our after-school club?
- To experience adventure and the wonders of math!
- These classes are designed specifically for students who don’t have the time to commit to our 5-day-per-week Math Academy (perhaps because they are enrolled in a full-time school), but they would still like to experience what we do best – awakening the wonder of math!
- Our approach to math is an alternative to Common-Core-based, standardized-test-focused, and textbook-reliant learning.
- The primary focus of our club is to engage students in math puzzles, games, problem solving, and discovery.
- For students who feel under-confident in math, or who say that they “don’t like math”, our club could ignite their interest in math in a new way.
- Working in small groups on math problems helps to develop communication and social skills.
- Students who are currently enrolled in our Math Academy will already be getting all of the above, and therefore should not enroll in this club.
How do the Math Club classes work?
The club is intended as a supplement to the math that students are receiving in their school.
There is little focus on skills work in the club classes. The emphasis is on discovery, puzzles, games, and problem solving. Math should be an adventure!
There are separate classes for each grade, fifth through eighth.
Each class meets live (via Zoom), once per week for 55 minutes.
We believe that it is highly beneficial for students to work on math in small groups. To make this possible, we will use Zoom breakout rooms.
What are the dates and times of the Math Club classes?
Students can easily join at any time during the year.
The club vacations follow our Jamie York Academy calendar.
All classes are 55 minutes long. The starting times are listed below in MT (which is 2 hours behind ET, and 1 hour ahead of PT).
-
- 5th Grade: Wednesday at 5pm MT
- 6th Grade: Monday at 5pm MT
- 7th Grade: Wednesday at 5pm MT
- 8th Grade: Wednesday at 4pm MT
- Grades 9-11 (combined): Thursday at 4pm.

Other Details
The cost for our Math Club is $71.25 per month. Upon signup, you will be charged the first month, subsequent payments are made monthly on the first of the month starting March1.
If you join after March 1st you will only be charged for the remaining months of the Academy.
This is not small group tutoring. The size of the classes could be twenty students, or more.
All classes are live. There are no recordings.
Other than thinking about the week’s puzzle, there are no assignments or homework for the club.
It is essential for students to have their video cameras turned on. We realize that many students today feel shy, or that turning on their camera may cause anxiety. These students may wish to be invisible and silent. As educators, we believe it is important to support students in finding the courage to face situations that make them feel uncomfortable, thereby helping them to find their voice and be seen in the world. Furthermore, we build a stronger sense of community when we can see each other and communicate both verbally and non-verbally.
